Chakras are Yoga’s way of understanding your psychology, and the reality that there is no separation between your mind and your body. Every injury and illness also have psychological symptoms. And, every thought and feeling have a physical symptom in the body. Through Chakra balancing, you can identify areas of your life that are either overcompensating or are avoidant or shut down. It’s important to know this does not make you wrong or bad. It is just your way of finding balance. Through yoga and the Chakras, you learn how to move your energy so that it supports where you are and what you need today.

When all the 7 seven chakras are balanced, you feel integrated wholeness. That’s the opposite of feeling scattered, fractured or all over the place. It’s important to note, that having all of your Chakras perfectly balanced is typically a temporary experience of bliss and enlightenment, a result of a potent yoga experience. This feeling of bliss will last a few hours. Each time you experience this overt wellbeing, you will discharge old stagnant energy that has been stuck in the body. Over time you will gain mastery over your mind and your energy, and can channel it at will.

Trauma by definition means that you experience something that is overwhelming to your nervous system, and therefore it stays unresolved within your mind/body connection. This can be Big T things, like abuse, sexual assault, loss of a loved one, a natural disaster, diagnosis, or other life changing situation. Or they can be Small T things like growing up with controlling parents, being fired from a job, a hurtful argument with a friend, being rejected or betrayed by a lover. The nervous system treats both the same, by flooding the body with stress hormones. Yoga helps to regulate the nervous system, to bring about a feeling of stability, safety and calm. Various types of yoga can be used to manage Trauma. Due to trauma (or trauma triggers) some folks tend to be overstimulated, anxious, restless and are uncomfortable with stillness and quiet. These folks would benefit from Vinyasa yoga, that will give them a safe and effective way to channel that nervous or hyper energy. Others have a trauma response that leaves them feeling shut down or lethargic, these folks would benefit from Yin or a gentle Flow class, where they can slowly stimulate their energy to feel more light hearted, optimistic or energized.

While chakra meditation can induce sensations of happiness and awareness, there is some controversy over its safety in certain situations. As with all exercise and emotional capacity building, it is always best to get your doctor’s approval. Chakra Balancing is simply put, a way for you to move energy deliberately up or down from one chakra to another. If you tend to have an excess of energy in your upper chakras, you would want to avoid practices that move energy up. If you have an excess of energy that is held in the lower chakras, you would not want to move additional energy down. Chakra Balancing can be safe for everyone, but it is best experienced under the guidance and support of a Chakra expert and Trauma Informed facilitator.

The word Chakra is an old Sanskrit word and can be translated as ‘spinning wheel’. Chakra yoga benefits you by helping you become aware of your body's subtle energy system and aids in opening and balancing your chakras! When your body is balanced, energy flows freely. The sensation of this free flowing energy can be invigorating, revitalizing, and peaceful.
